3) Your hosting company is going to drop the ball.-  It doesn’t matter how reliable your hosting company is, there will eventually be a problem.  Maybe there will be a crash in loading time or maybe a server crash altogether.  The only thing that you can do is accept it.  However if it becomes a habit, then you will need to look for a new hosting service.

4)  Having to promote your website. Promoting your website will be expensive, time consuming, or both.  In fact, the most successful websites are not successful because a lot of time was spent building and maintaining their site, it is because they spent a lot of time promoting it.  Your website isn’t the Field of Dreams, just because you build it, doesn’t mean anyone is going come.  Promotion could mean a variety of different things and they will all be important.  Unfortunately, outside of outsourcing everything, your only option is to grit your teeth and get to it.  One method of promoting your website is through a traffic exchange- I recently started my own manual traffic exchange.

Learning to understand your website traffic is one of the most important aspects of success with a Internet home business Most web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information that you then have to interpret and make pertinent use of. However, the data you receive from your host company can be overwhelming if you don’t understand how to apply it to your home based business business and website. Let’s start by examining the most basic data – the average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

These figures are the most accurate measure of your website’s activity. It would appear on the surface that the more traffic you see recorded, the better you can assume your website is doing, but this is an inaccurate perception. One way to determine this is to find out how long on average your visitors spend on your site. If the time spent is relatively brief, it usually indicates an underlying problem. Then the challenge is to figure out what that problem is.

It could be that your keywords are directing the wrong type of visitors to your website, or that your graphics are confusing or intimidating, causing the visitor to exit rapidly. As you can see, these statistics will reveal vital information about the effectiveness of individual pages, and visitor habits and motivation. This is essential information to any successful Internet marketing campaign.

Your website undoubtedly has exit pages, such as a final order or contact form. This is a page you can expect your visitor to exit rapidly. However, not every visitor to your site is going to find exactly what he or she is looking for, so statistics may show you a number of different exit pages. This is normal unless you notice a exit trend on a particular page that is not intended as an exit page. In the case that a significant percentage of visitors are exiting your website on a page not designed for that purpose, you must closely examine that particular page to discern what the problem is.   Once you pinpoint potential weaknesses on that page, minor modifications in content or graphic may have a significant impact on the keeping visitors moving through your site instead of exiting at the wrong page. After you have analyzed your visitor statistics, it’s time to turn to your keywords and phrases. Notice if particular keywords are directing a specific type of visitor to your site. The more targeted the visitor – meaning that they find what they are looking for on your site, and even better, fill out your contact form or make a purchase – the more valuable that keyword is. However, if you find a large number of visitors are being directed – or should I say misdirected – to your site by a particular keyword or phrase, that keyword demands adjustment.   Keywords are vital to bringing quality visitors to your site who are ready to do business with you. Close analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find your site will give you a vital understanding of your visitor’s needs and motivations. Finally, if you notice that users are finding your website by typing in your company name, break open the champagne! It means you have achieved a significant level of brand recognition, and this is a sure sign of burgeoning success.

Sometimes it can be frustrating to put so much work into your SEO approach without seeming to be able to grab that coveted number one position on the search engines.  It is surprisingly common to see people get stuck at number five or six in the rankings.  If you have done everything that you can think of to get ahead in the rankings game, but still aren’t at the top, here are 4 quick SEO tactics that might be able to help.

The first is pretty simple, but most people overlook it.  Take a look at what your competitors are doing and “steal” their keywords.  See what keywords they are using in their title tags.  Find out what keywords they are using in their anchor text, especially the ones that are pointing to their money pages.  Some will even include their keywords in their meta data.  However, keep in mind that savvy webmasters will actually put dummy keywords in their meta data to keep people like you off their scent.  This might sound like a shady idea, but only because it is called “stealing”.  Think of this way, call it learning.  All you are really doing is learning what they are doing and then doing it better, if possible.

Another important SEO tactic, if you are having trouble boosting your ranking, is to take some time and create a short list of high value backlink sources.  Ideally they will come from related sites and authority sites.  A few additional high power backlinks could be exactly what you need to bump your website up those last few spots.  If you aren’t sure whether or not your links are going to be powerful enough, use a tool like LinkScape to calculate your MozRank.  This will tell you the quality of your incoming links, whereas other tools will focus on quantity.  Having this information will be able to tell you what to do next.  If your competitors have a higher MozRank, then you need to improve yours.  If your MozRank is higher, but you still cannot rank above them, then you probably have issues with either on page optimization or poor anchor texts.  Either way, you will find out what needs to be improved upon in your overall SEO strategy.

The final thing to do is use Google Webmaster Tools to do your own site diagnostics.  A lot of people will use 3rd party sources to do a website audit, but none of these sources knows more about how search engines are seeing your website better than Google itself.  You should check the following at minimum: make sure that you have a sitemap submitted, find duplicate tag and descriptions and fix them, find out if you are creating an issues for spiders, find any 404 pages, and you can even tell Google how to index your images.

All of these tactics will be a great addition to any SEO strategy and could be exactly what you need in order to get to the top of the search rankings.
