You have presented 3 very good methods for making money online here. The advantage of building your own list is you have them forever (or at least as long as their email address is valid) so you can continually update them with new products, offers, or anything you think will attract them to conduct business with you. Then you can move on to the other 2 steps you mentioned as the whole thing flows together into a profitable present and future for your business.

I think what puts a lot of people off email marketing is having to get squeeze pages and opt in forms set up, especially for Newbies. Of course, that means they are missing out on possible sales with follow up emails.
