I think that the best strategy for building links to your site is a combination of forums, blogs, articles and social marketing. Your strategy of welcoming new members is an easy way to start. As time goes on one can then check out posts that interest you and add to them. It makes no sense to add to posts for the sake of adding. You have to be able to make a contribution because otherwise, as you point out, reading all the posts can be a waste of time.
