Don’t Be Afraid To Give Up On A Affiliate Marketing Program
The phrase, “A winner never quits” is sometimes quoted by Internet affiliate marketers as a reason to never give up in spite of failure to make any money with a particular affiliate program.
Despite the fact that they are not making money many Internet home business owners refuse to quit a particular affiliate marketing program. Some affiliate marketers would rather loose money in the misguided belief that “a winner never quits”.
After all, in an industry where more than 95% of people never make any money at all, and quit before they have given themselves a realistic chance to succeed, persistence would seem to be a highly prized virtue.
And indeed, persistence is one of the keys behind real Internet affiliate marketing success. Nobody has ever made money by throwing up an affiliate website, doodling around on a traffic exchange, buying into an advertising Co-op, and sleeping in until eleven o’clock in the morning.
However, just as it is a mistake to give up on an affiliate program to easily and too early, so it is also a mistake to stubbornly stick with a flawed program in the mistaken belief that never quitting means something like never bailing out of burning aircraft.
An affiliate program is simply a means to a greater goal that you have set yourself, namely, to make a certain quantity of money on the Internet in order to be able to achieve whatever it is you want to do. Obviously you want to take care in selecting the best affiliate programs for your purpose.
You need to apply due diligence when you research affiliate programs, and you need to study how to effectively promote them in order to make money and maximise your profits.
Now, it is quite possible that the owners of the affiliate program may make changes at work to the detriment of the program. Or it may be that the program has some structural flaws that only become apparent when you attempt to make money with it. Or perhaps you encounter problems with support, commission payments and so forth. Or you may even find that what you thought was a genuine program is in fact little more than a scam. These could all be good reasons to quit that particular affiliate program.
There is no point as they say in “flogging a dead horse”, especially if you have not yet reached your goal. Instead, you are going to have to replace the horse and move on as quickly as possible.
As your affiliate marketing skills grow, you will want to increase the number of affiliate products and services that you promote in order to multiply your profits. Hopefully, you will have been building up a list of people to whom you can market your products and generate repeat sales.
As you broaden your range of affiliate products, you will find that some make you much more money than others. Here again, you will be serving your ultimate goal much better by dropping those programs that do not generate much profit for you. Again, this has nothing to do with “quitting” and everything to do with persistently pursuing your ultimate goal.
So, it is true that “a winner never quits, and a quitter never wins”, but it is also true that a winner never mistakes the means for the end. Affiliate marketing programs are simply means to a greater end, and not ends in themselves. So if your affiliate marketing programs are not working after you really have given them your best effort, drop them and find some better affiliate marketing programs that will help you achieve your goals.

Beautifully written and presented! Our company took a substantial hit trying to get set up with a large affiliate program. What may work well for one company in terms of affiliate marketing can spell disaster for another.
Good advice for entreprenuers in network marketing. We do feel if we quit, we have failed but it is not always so. better to find your niche than hold on to something that may drain your energy.
Hi John,
I’ll agree it is wise to drop affiliate programs that are not profitable, but a winner will always persevere and push forward to make their website profitable. The way I see it is a winner nevers quits is more about being flexible to change and not about stubborn tendacies.
